If you're visiting Jeju Island as a foreign traveler, you may have wondered:
"There are duty-free shops in Jeju? Not just at the airport — but in Jungmun too?"
"Can I use duty-free shops if I arrive by cruise ship or ferry?"

The answer to both is YES. Jeju Island is the only place in South Korea where even Korean nationals can enjoy duty-free shopping — and for foreign visitors, the benefits go even further. On top of that, stores like Olive Young now offer instant on-the-spot VAT refunds starting from just KRW 15,000 — no airport counter needed. This guide covers everything: the Jungmun Duty-Free Shop, cruise and ferry arrivals, the instant refund system, and more.

🗺️ Where Are Jeju's Duty-Free Shops? — It's Not Just the Airport!

Duty-free shopping in Jeju is more varied than most visitors expect. There are three main types: airport duty-free shops, the Jungmun (downtown) duty-free shop, and port duty-free shops for travelers departing by sea.

⚠️ Lotte & Shilla City Stores — International Departure Only These stores are not the same as JDC or JTO. They are classified as bonded shops (보세판매장), open only to travelers departing internationally — flying directly from Jeju to another country, or leaving by cruise ship.

✅ Jeju → Japan / China / your home country (international flight or cruise) → eligible
❌ Jeju → Seoul → your home country (domestic leg first) → not eligible at these stores

If transiting through Seoul before flying home, use JDC airport or JTO Jungmun instead — both are open to all visitors.
☀️ Sunny's Tip If you're visiting the Jungmun resort area, stop by the ICC Jeju 1F duty-free shop — it almost always has better discount events than the airport, especially for premium spirits. Items bought here must be collected at the airport or port pickup counter when you depart, not on the spot.

🛍️ What's Inside the Jungmun Duty-Free Shop?

The Jungmun Duty-Free Shop stocks a wide range of products. K-beauty brands are a major draw — Sulwhasoo, Whoo, VT Cosmetics, and Jeju-native skincare lines are all available at duty-free prices. The spirits section is particularly strong, with whiskies including Glenfiddich, Kavalan, Aultmore, Ballantine's, and Royal Salute — often at an additional 10% discount on top of duty-free pricing.

☀️ Sunny's Tip The Jungmun shop (JTO) and airport shop (JDC) share a combined $800 USD purchase limit per visit, with spirits up to 2L / $400 on top. Check your remaining balance before shopping at the airport if you've already visited Jungmun — call JTO (+82-64-780-7700) or JDC (+82-64-740-9900).

🚢 For Cruise & Ferry Travelers — You're Covered Too

🛳️ Jeju welcomes many visitors arriving by sea. Large cruise ships typically dock at Jeju Port (North Port) near Jeju City, while some larger vessels use the Gangjeong Cruise Terminal in Seogwipo. Both ports have duty-free shops and Tax Refund facilities for departing travelers.

The port duty-free shop and Tax Refund counter are available for passengers departing by sea. Signage is in Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and English. Note that while the port duty-free shop opens between 6–7 AM, purchases are only possible from 30 minutes before your vessel departs.

☀️ Sunny's Tip The port duty-free shop opens between 6–7 AM, but you cannot make purchases until 30 minutes before your vessel departs. Don't show up too early expecting to shop! For the latest schedule, call ahead — JTO: +82-64-780-7700 / JDC: +82-64-740-9900.

💰 VAT Refund: Two Ways to Get Your Money Back

Apart from duty-free shops, you can also reclaim the 10% VAT charged at regular stores across Jeju — Olive Young, department stores, cosmetics boutiques, souvenir shops, and more. There are two ways to do this.

🟢 OLIVE YOUNG & PARTICIPATING STORES — INSTANT REFUND Starting from just KRW 15,000! Show your passport at checkout and the VAT is deducted right on the spot — no airport counter needed.

💳 Minimum: KRW 15,000 per transaction
👤 How: Show passport → staff scans → VAT removed immediately
✈️ Airport counter: Not required
📦 Items: Take them with you right away

⚠️ Each transaction must be KRW 15,000+ separately — you cannot combine small receipts. Buy everything in one go!
Standard Instant Refund (Other Tax Free stores)

💳 Per transaction: KRW 30,000 or more — under KRW 200,000
👤 Per-person total limit: up to KRW 1,000,000
💡 VAT deducted at checkout — no airport counter needed
🏷️ Look for the Tax Free / Immediate Refund sticker at store entrances

For purchases over KRW 200,000 in a single transaction, keep your Tax Refund receipt and collect the refund at the airport or port Tax Refund counter before departure.

⚠️ Must-Know Warnings

🔴 Jungmun & city duty-free — items not handed over on-site; collect at airport or port counter when departing
🔴 Olive Young: KRW 15,000 minimum per transaction — no combining small receipts
🔴 Other stores: instant refund KRW 30,000–200,000 per transaction
🔴 Over KRW 200,000 → keep receipt, visit airport/port Tax Refund counter
🔴 Don't lose Tax Refund receipts — photograph them immediately as backup
🔴 Exceeding your home country's import allowance means tax on arrival
🔴 Alcohol and tobacco: age 19+ only
🔴 Duty-free items must go in carry-on luggage — not checked bags
🔴 Port duty-free: purchases only from 30 minutes before vessel departure
☀️ Sunny's Tip Import allowances vary by country. China's limit is around CNY 5,000; Japan's is roughly JPY 200,000. Shopping within Jeju's duty-free limits doesn't protect you from your home country's customs rules — always check before you pack.

📱 Shop Smarter — Pre-Order Online

The JTO online duty-free store (jejudfs.com) supports English and Chinese, accepting pre-orders from 30 days before departure up to 4 hours before your flight. The JDC online store (jdcdutyfree.com) takes orders up to 10 days ahead, with a deadline of noon the day before departure.

⚠️ Online Pre-Order Deadlines Are Strict Miss the cutoff and your items will not be delivered to the pickup counter in time.

🕐 JTO (Jungmun): Order at least 4 hours before your flight
🕐 JDC (Airport): Order by noon the day before departure
🕐 Lotte / Shilla: Deadlines vary — check the app before ordering
☀️ Sunny's Tip Chinese visitors can shop and pay through WeChat mini-programs operated by both Lotte and Shilla duty-free. For multilingual help in English, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or Vietnamese, call the 1330 Korea Travel Hotline — free from anywhere in Korea.
