1. Mastering Local Traffic Rules

Jeju has unique road systems that can be confusing for international drivers.

  • Roundabouts (Rotary): Jeju has more roundabouts than any other city in Korea. The rule is simple: cars already inside the circle have the right of way. Always slow down and yield to your left before entering.

  • Unprotected Left Turns (비보호): You'll often see "Unprotected Left Turn" signs. You can turn left ONLY when the main traffic light is GREEN and there is no oncoming traffic. Turning on a red light is illegal and dangerous!

☀️ Sunny's Tip Jeju enforces the 'Safe Speed 5030' policy (50km/h in cities, 30–60km/h on coastal and school zones). Don't expect to zoom around — add about 20% more time to whatever your GPS predicts!

⚠️ School Zones (Silver Zones): Speed limits drop strictly to 30km/h in these areas. Fines are doubled here, so please slow down and keep an eye out for our neighbors.

2. Watch the Bus Lanes!

⚠️ Important: Jeju Bus Lane Regulations
Jeju has two types of bus lanes, and the enforcement times are different. If you enter these lanes during restricted hours, you will face a fine (around 50,000–60,000 KRW).

1. Central Bus Lanes (Road center / Blue solid lines)

  • Where: Major roads in Jeju City (e.g., near the Airport, City Hall).
  • When: 24 hours / 365 days. These lanes are strictly for buses and taxis only. Never enter them!

2. Roadside Bus Lanes (Right side of the road / Blue dashed lines)

  • Where: Coastal roads and main city outskirts.
  • When: Weekdays only (Monday–Friday).
    • Morning: 07:00–09:00
    • Evening: 16:30–19:30
  • Rule: Outside of these hours and on weekends/holidays, regular cars can use these lanes.

☀️ Sunny's Tip My best advice is to stay out of the blue-lined lanes entirely while driving in downtown Jeju City. The "24-hour Central Bus Lanes" are especially tricky for newcomers. Watch out for the blue paint on the road — if you see it, stay in the next lane over!

3. Safety & Parking Tips

  • Narrow Roads: Roads near Olle trails or inside small villages can be very narrow. Keep an eye out for oncoming traffic and always drive slowly.
  • Mountain Roads: Jeju's mid-mountain roads (like the 1100 Road) can be foggy or icy in winter. Always drive with caution and check weather updates.
  • Refueling: Return the car with the same fuel level you started with. Fill up at a nearby gas station to avoid extra service fees from the rental company.

☀️ Sunny's Tip Why are the roads so narrow? In Jeju, many traditional houses were built long ago without private parking lots. Because of this, you'll see many residents parking their cars along the narrow side streets. This makes already tight roads even narrower! When driving through residential or village areas, please stay alert and maintain a slow speed to safely pass parked vehicles and any residents walking nearby.

If you're planning to drive in Jeju, booking a rental car with clear English support and full coverage options can make your trip much more comfortable — especially for first-time visitors.

☀️ Sunny's Tip Plan to return your rental car at least 2 hours before your flight. Between the shuttle ride and airport security, you'll need that buffer time!

Summary

"Bus for the distance, Taxi for the convenience" is great for some, but a rental car equals ultimate freedom! Just remember your IDP and drive safely.
