Where Locals Eat Sashimi at Sunset in Jeju: Jocheon Port Guide

Parasol, sashimi, and a sunset — Jocheon evenings have a quiet romance to them

As the sun starts to dip, Jocheon Port transforms. Locals roll in with folding chairs and side dishes packed in containers, tourists slow their pace, and everyone quietly agrees: this is where the evening belongs. Pick up a tray of freshly sliced sashimi from Jocheon Susan Fish Center just steps away, find a spot on the breakwater, and watch the harbor turn gold. It sounds simple — and it is. That's exactly why it works.

Jocheon Port — A Different Place After 5 PM

During the day, Jocheon is a quiet fishing harbor — a few boats, some nets drying in the sun, not much else. But come late afternoon, it shifts entirely. Cars start pulling into the wide open lot, trunks pop open, and suddenly folding tables are going up everywhere. There's a relaxed, unpretentious energy here that you don't find at the tourist-facing spots.

The parking lot is huge — and completely free

Parking is free and the lot is genuinely spacious — no circling, no squeezing. Even as a Jeju resident, I find myself stopping here on evening walks, and every single time the sunset pulls me to a halt.

Jocheon Susan Fish Center — How It Works

Right at the port entrance, Jocheon Susan Fish Center is the place. Walk in and you'll find a chalkboard listing the day's fish and prices. Choose your fish, pay, and they slice it thick on the spot — no waiting tables, no reservations. Just grab your tray and head outside.

The chalkboard changes daily

On the day I visited, prices were: wild-caught yellow sea bream (hwangdom) ₩39,000/kg, farmed ₩37,000/kg; flounder (gwangeo) ₩37,000/kg; spiny lobster (gumunjjaengi) ₩69,000/kg. Sea squirt (meongge) was ₩14,000/kg, live octopus ₩18,500 per piece, and abalone was also available. The chalkboard promised thick slices — and they delivered.

☀️ Sunny's Tip Pay with cash and you might get a bonus — sea squirt or conch on the house. It's not guaranteed, but it happened to me. Cards are accepted, but cash gets you that extra nod from the staff.

Setting Up Your Spot — Tables, Mats & Snacks

Next door to the fish center, there's a small convenience store that rents out tables and chairs for just ₩4,000 — no time limit. You set up, enjoy, and return the gear yourself when done. If you have a folding chair or a picnic mat in the car, that works just as well.

Grab drinks, beer, or soju from the convenience store and you're all set. Bring kimchi and some greens from your accommodation and the table fills up fast. Showing up with a container of homemade banchan — that's the true local move.

☀️ Sunny's Tip Walk toward the far end of the breakwater for the best sunset angle — the view opens up beautifully. And if you have time, the café Siso sits just a short walk up along the Olle Trail from here; the sunset from there is equally stunning and worth a detour.

Sunset Timing — When to Arrive for the Best Light

The sun sets over the water beyond the breakwater here, which means the golden light stretches long across the surface — genuinely spectacular. Aim to arrive about 30 minutes before sunset to secure a good spot. Here's the practical move: buy your sashimi an hour before sunset, then claim your space. The queue at the fish center builds up fast once the light starts turning golden.

Honest Verdict — Why Jeju Locals Keep Coming Back

You don't need a reservation, a fancy restaurant, or a view café to have one of the best evenings in Jeju. Fresh sashimi, a sea breeze, and Jocheon Port at golden hour — that's genuinely enough. It's affordable, free-form, and quietly romantic in the way that only unhurried, local places can be.

As a Jeju resident, I come here on ordinary evenings just because I feel like it. No elaborate plan needed — just show up around sunset, grab a tray of sashimi, and sit on the breakwater. On those evenings, living in Jeju feels like a gift.
