Remicon Cafe Jeju: The Hwabuk Hideaway with a Gallery, Scent Bar, and Garden
I thought I was just visiting a cafe. Two hours later, I'd wandered through an art gallery, tested a handful of perfumes, caught a brass concert I wasn't expecting, and ended up lying in a hammock surrounded by trees. Remicon is a multi-space hideaway in Hwabuk that mixes a cafe, a gallery, a scent brand, and a big garden all under one roof — coffee and bread on one side, art and quiet corners on the other. It's tucked away inland, so it's not the kind of place you stumble onto by chance — a friend brought me here one afternoon. Honestly, when I first heard the name, I wondered if it had any connection to actual concrete-mixing trucks. Turns out, it does.
A Multi-Space Hideaway in Hwabuk
Remicon was created by the family behind Jeju Remicon, a local ready-mix concrete company. Instead of leaving the land next to their factory empty, they turned it into an open, multi-purpose cultural space — while still keeping the family's concrete business running.
Parking wasn't something I had to worry about. The lot is spacious, and even on a weekday afternoon, we pulled in without any trouble finding a spot.
Not Just Another Cafe — I Realized It on the Stairs
There was a sign on the stairwell wall heading up to the second floor, laying out what this space is trying to be. Reading it, I understood exactly what Remicon's cafe is going for: honest, solid bread and coffee, paired with ongoing cultural programs — performances, exhibitions, book talks — so it's not a one-and-done visit but somewhere you'd want to return to each season. Coincidentally, there was an outdoor performance happening the day we went. Not many cafes commit to something like this so fully.
Near the counter, I noticed signs for a Care Kids Zone and Care Pet Zone — etiquette guides for visitors with children or pets. Which, read the other way, means both are genuinely welcome here. It seemed like a good spot for families, or for a walk with your dog.
Inside Remicon Cafe
Sitting on the second floor, you can see a water curtain feature through the floor-to-ceiling windows — it quietly draws your eye. Beyond it, the outdoor terrace and garden stretch out, so even indoors, it never felt cramped.
After taking that in, I headed up to the rooftop. From up there, the whole terrace opens up below — parasols lined up under a big shade tree. That view alone made the climb worth it.
Truffle Focaccia and a Decaf Latte
We ordered the truffle focaccia and two decaf lattes. The focaccia was 6,300 won, and it was bigger than I expected — plenty to split between two people. It wasn't served warm, but the truffle aroma came through subtly, and the bread itself had a chewy texture that got better with every bite. It wasn't the cheese-loaded kind — more like the truffle flavor was worked into the dough itself.
My friend had tried the iced version before and recommended it, so I went with decaf this time. She said it tasted a little less rich than the regular latte — which makes sense for decaf — but it was perfect for an afternoon without the caffeine.
One fun detail: instead of a knife, they gave us a fork and scissors to eat the bread with. A knife is the usual setup, so scissors caught me off guard at first — but thinking about it, scissors actually make more sense for cutting through chewy focaccia. Small thing, but it stuck with me.
Another detail I noticed: iced coffee came in a paper cup instead of a plastic holder. It felt much less cold to hold, and — probably because of the paper — there wasn't the usual condensation that leaves your hands damp. A small touch, but it showed some real thought went into the details.
Gallery Remicon, Stories from Jeju Artists
The building next to the cafe is a full gallery, which mainly features work by Jeju-based artists.
Inside, the exhibition space keeps its raw concrete texture, and one installation stood out — a horse sculpture placed at the center of the room. Paintings and objects were arranged together, so walking through and taking it all in was part of the fun.
Further in, a small separate room was set up as a screening space, showing a video installation. Watching it alone in the dark room, the feeling lingered even longer.
Fa.fumus, A Moment to Experience Scent
One corner of the gallery is home to Fa.fumus, a Jeju-based scent brand. It's not just for browsing — you can actually test the scents, and buy if something catches you. I was drawn to Mare, a cool, ocean-inspired scent, while my friend spent a long time with Hinoki, a scent that carries the feel of a cypress forest.
The scent lineup was varied, and they carried a range of products too — perfumes, diffusers, and aroma oils among them.
An Outdoor Concert I Stumbled Into
Out in the garden, an outdoor performance was already underway — a brass ensemble playing. It was completely unplanned, which somehow made it feel even better. I assumed it was a special event, but later realized performances are actually part of what Remicon tries to offer throughout the year. That line from the stairwell sign, about a "living space where performances happen," turned out to be exactly true.
A Garden Walk Full of Green
The garden turned out to be much bigger than I expected. The first floor has a bridge crossing a small pond, and the second floor has its own rest area with a swing and hammock before the path continues up to the third-floor walking trail — honestly too much to see if you only stop for coffee.
On the way up, I lay down in the hammock at the second-floor rest area for a bit. The breeze was much cooler than I expected, so I ended up staying there longer than planned. It wasn't crowded either, which made it a quiet place to rest.
Further along the trail, a dirt path lined with silver grass and trees continues — quiet enough that it's hard to believe you're still in the middle of the city.
Partway along the trail, there's a blue steel arch that works as a nice photo spot — a good place to pause for a picture before continuing on.
From higher up the trail, the whole cafe building and garden come into view at once.
