5 Cool Forest Trails in Jeju to Escape the Summer Heat

Summer in Jeju City can get brutally hot. Every time I drive up from downtown toward the jungsangan — Jeju's inland belt between the coast and Hallasan — I actually watch the number on my dashboard thermometer drop a few degrees.

The closer I get to a shaded forest trail, the more the air itself seems to change.

When the heat hits in summer, I actually head for the mountains more often than the beach. Today I'm sharing five mid-mountain forest trails I turn to again and again during those months — all noticeably cooler than downtown or the coast, thanks to dense tree cover.

Even in peak summer, these five places stay fairly comfortable to walk through.

Place What Makes It Special
Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest Shaded boardwalk + cold spring footbath
Saryeoni Forest Trail Dense forest + long dirt trail
Gyorae Natural Recreation Forest Short walk or full oreum hike, your choice
Banongoreum Hinoki Cypress Forest Hinoki cypress shade + loop trail
Gwaneumsa Trail Forest path + a hidden wind cave on an official route

1. Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest — Jangsaeng-i Trail & Neonadeuri-gil

Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest actually has two very different options. If you want a real trekking route, go for Jangsaeng-i Trail. If you just want to enjoy the shade without much effort, Neonadeuri-gil is the one.

Right at the entrance of Neonadeuri-gil, a straight boardwalk stretches out through a Japanese cedar forest — the trees are so dense that it never felt too hot, even in peak summer. The way the shadows fall across the boardwalk makes for a pretty striking scene, too.

📍 Address 584 Myeongnim-ro, Jeju City, Jeju Island
🕖 Opening Hours Summer (Mar–Oct) 07:00–18:00 / Winter (Nov–Feb) 07:00–17:00
💰 Admission (per person) Adults ₩1,000 · Teens ₩600 · Children ₩300
🚗 Parking Fee Compact/eco-friendly ₩1,500 · Mid-size ₩3,000 · Large ₩5,000
🥾 Jangsaeng-i Trail Course A 11.1km (about 3 hrs) · Course B 7.2km
🚶 Neonadeuri-gil 3km · about 1 hr 30 min · fully boardwalk · plenty of shade
☀️ Sunny's Tip After finishing the trail, my feet always end up hot and tired — but the footbath area was renovated in 2026, with new tiles and proper seating. The water flows straight down from a spring, so it's ice-cold the moment you dip your feet in. After three hours of walking, that cold water hitting my tired feet felt incredible.

2. Saryeoni Forest Trail

A canopy-covered stretch of Saryeoni Forest Trail

The section toward the Bijarim-ro side is where I find Saryeoni Forest Trail especially peaceful. Wide dirt paths, dense forest, and trees tall enough to block out the sky create some genuinely cool shade.

Compared to the area near the Namjoro entrance, this section gets far fewer visitors, so it feels quieter and more relaxed. Walking here while listening to the wind through the trees and the birds, I completely lost track of time.

📍 Bijarim-ro Entrance Bonggae-dong, Jeju City (visitor center along Bijarim-ro)
📍 Namjoro Entrance Gasi-ri, Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo City (Bulgeun Oreum entrance)
📏 Total Distance About 10km
🕖 Closing Time 17:00 (no entry after this time)
💰 Admission Free
🚗 Parking Free at Namjoro entrance / Free public lot at Bijarim-ro (about a 2.5km walk to the actual entrance)
☀️ Sunny's Tip If you park at the Bijarim-ro public lot, you'll need to walk about another 2.5km just to reach the actual trail entrance. If your time is limited, the Namjoro (Bulgeun Oreum) entrance parking lot is a much easier option.

3. Gyorae Natural Recreation Forest

Hiking through the fern-covered slope on the way up Keun Jigeurioreum

Gyorae Natural Recreation Forest offers two very different options: a short ecological observation trail, or a longer trail that climbs all the way to the summit of Keun Jigeurioreum — one of Jeju's many oreum, or volcanic hills. Being able to choose based on how much time or energy I had that day was genuinely useful.

Course Distance Duration Difficulty
Ecological Observation Trail 1.5km 40 min round trip 🟢 Easy
Oreum Trail (to Keun Jigeurioreum Summit) About 3.5km 2 hr 30 min round trip 🟠 Moderate
📍 Address Gyorae-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, Jeju Island
🕖 Ecological Trail Hours Summer (Mar–Oct) 09:00–17:00
Winter (Nov–Feb) 09:00–16:00
🕖 Oreum Trail Hours Summer (Mar–Oct) 09:00–16:00
Winter (Nov–Feb) 09:00–15:00
💰 Admission Adult ₩1,000 · Teen/Military ₩600 · Under 12 & 65+ free

4. Banongoreum Hinoki Cypress Forest

Banongoreum really breaks down into two parts: the summit trail and the loop trail. I wouldn't recommend the summit trail in summer — it's a tough climb, and part of it has no shade at all.

The loop trail, on the other hand — locally called dulle-gil, meaning roughly "circumference trail" — runs through Japanese cedar and Hinoki cypress, so there's plenty of shade and it's a much easier walk. If beating the heat is the goal, the loop trail is the clear choice.

📍 Address San 108, Gyorae-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, Jeju Island
🕖 Hours Open access, no set hours — like most oreum on Jeju, there's no on-site management
💰 Price Free
🚗 Parking Free dirt lot at the trailhead, no fee
⏱ Duration 20–30 min from entrance to summit · about 1 hr for all 3 loop courses combined
📐 Gradient Loop trail is gentle · Course 1 (summit route) is steep
🌳 Shade Loop trail: plenty (cedar & cypress) · summit trail: little in some sections
🥾 Surface Dirt path (some rope and stone-step sections)
☀️ Sunny's Tip Midway along Course 3, there's a small detour into a dedicated Hinoki cypress grove planted in neat, even rows — you can tell right away it's man-made. I zigzagged back and forth between rows 1 through 5, breathing in as much phytoncide (the natural aromatic compounds trees release) as I could. Once you're done exploring, heading back to Course 3 brings you right out near the trail map sign at the entrance.

5. Gwaneumsa Trail — A Natural Air Conditioner on an Official Route

The wind cave entrance along Gwaneumsa Trail

In summer, I always recommend the Gwaneumsa course up to the wooden bridge or, if you have more time, all the way to Tamna Valley. Along the way, there's a wind cave — and right in front of it, someone has set up a wooden bench, exactly where you'd want to sit and rest.

The air coming out of that cave is genuinely cold. In the sunlight, I could actually see a faint white haze of cold air drifting out — it was that dramatic. I checked with my thermometer: 15.9°C just outside the cave, 10.2°C inside, with humidity at 66% that day.

It's technically part of the official trail, but hidden enough behind the trees and rocks that most people just walk right past it — I've hiked this trail many times myself and only properly found it this time. After sweating my way down from the mountain, sitting on that bench in front of the cold air felt incredible. I didn't want to get up. I think I just sat there doing nothing for a good 20 to 30 minutes.

📍 Location 588 Sallokbuk-ro, Odeung-dong, Jeju City, Jeju Island
🚶 To the Wooden Bridge Gentle forest path, suitable for anyone
🚶‍♀️ To Tamna Valley Restroom About 3.2km · 1–1.5 hrs
🚗 Parking Public lot available (switched to hourly pricing starting 2026 — check current rates before visiting)
🏪 Store None along the entire trail — bring water and snacks

Wrapping Up

All five of these trails are great for escaping the summer sun, but each has its own charm. If you want an easy boardwalk walk, go for Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest. If you want a long walk through deep, dense forest, Saryeoni Forest Trail is the one. If you want the flexibility to choose between a short stroll or a full oreum hike, Gyorae Natural Recreation Forest works well.

If you love Hinoki cypress forests, head to Banongoreum. And if you want a genuinely unusual, cool surprise along a forest trail, don't miss the wind cave on Gwaneumsa Trail.

Out of these five, Jeolmul Natural Recreation Forest is the one I end up at most often. There's more than one course to pick from — Jeolmul Oreum, Neonadeuri-gil, Jangsaeng-i Trail — so I can match the walk to how much time or energy I have that day. And once I'm done, there's a spring-fed footbath right there to cool my feet down. That combination is hard to beat.

Even in these shaded forests, midday can still get warm in summer, so I'd recommend visiting in the morning if you can. For trails without any stores, bring water and snacks ahead of time. If Jeju's coastal sun feels like too much on a given day, heading up into the jungsangan and into the forest is always a good move.
