Where to Buy Gimbap Before Dawn in Jeju
If you're doing the Baengnoktam summit course, you'll almost certainly be leaving somewhere between 4 and 6 in the morning. And that's when the question hits: where on earth do you find food open at that hour? It's trickier than you'd think. Below I've broken it down by route so you can find the right spot for your starting direction — and I'd really recommend calling ahead the evening before to reserve a packed order.
๐ Pre-Dawn Departures — Seongpanak Route via Bongae-dong
If you're chasing a summit sunrise or need to leave especially early, the Bongae-dong strip is your best bet. It sits right along Route 97 (Beonnyeong-ro), the main road leading up to the Seongpanak trailhead — so you can swing by, pick up your gimbap, and head straight up without any backtracking.
① Dokssaegi Gimbap (๋ ์๊ธฐ๊น๋ฐฅ)
This place has almost legendary status among Hallasan early risers. Doors open at 3:40 AM — yes, really — which means it works no matter how ungodly early your start time is. Walk in at that hour and you'll find the place already full of people in hiking gear.
"Dokssaegi" is the Jeju dialect word for egg, and sure enough, the egg gimbap is the star here. The spicy squid gimbap and tuna gimbap are also popular. They only make a set amount each day, so they sometimes sell out and close before 11 AM.
๐ฑ Must-Order: Dokssaegi Gimbap (๋ ์๊ธฐ๊น๋ฐฅ, ₩3,000) — the namesake egg roll, the whole point of coming here. The spicy squid gimbap (์ง๋ฏธ์ฑ๋งค์ด์ด๋ฌต๊น๋ฐฅ, ₩3,900) and tuna gimbap (์ฐธ์น๊น๋ฐฅ, ₩3,900) are close seconds.

② Ttaengcho Gimbap & Singsing Wangmandu — Bongae Branch (๋ก์ด๊น๋ฐฅ์ฑ์ฑ์๋ง๋ ๋ด๊ฐ์ )
Another solid Bongae-dong option that early hikers rely on. It opens at 5 AM and runs until midnight with no regular days off, so day of the week and timing are basically non-issues. Beyond gimbap, they also sell big steamed dumplings and ramen — handy if you want a proper sit-down bite before the climb.
๐ฑ Must-Order: Gimbap + large steamed dumplings (์๋ง๋) combo — the dumplings are the reason regulars come back. Good for anyone who wants a proper warm bite before the climb rather than just a roll to go.

๐️ Leaving from Jeju City — Works for Both Seongpanak & Gwaneumsa
If you're staying somewhere in central Jeju City and heading toward either Seongpanak or Gwaneumsa, you'll naturally pass through the Ora-dong and Ara-dong area. These spots fall right along that path.
③ Jeju Sopung Gimbap (์ ์ฃผ์ํ๊น๋ฐฅ)
If you're coming from the Yeon-dong or Nohyeong-dong area — or near the airport — this place sits naturally on your route toward Seongpanak or Gwaneumsa as you pass through Ora-dong. It opens at 6 AM, so even early starters can make it work without rushing.
๐ฑ Must-Order: Classic Jeju-style gimbap — tightly packed, well-seasoned, and reliable. A straightforward locals' spot without the tourist markup. Call ahead and they'll have your order ready to grab and go.

④ Jeju Gimanbbok Main Branch (์ ์ฃผ๊น๋ง๋ณต ๋ณธ์ )
This is the place that put Jeju abalone gimbap on the map nationally. It's in Ora-dong, close to the airport, and sits comfortably on the Seongpanak/Gwaneumsa route. Opens at 8 AM, so it's better suited for hikers starting after 7 or so rather than the crack-of-dawn crew.
What makes it special: rice milled within 15 days, rolled with a house-made abalone entrail sauce that's been aged for at least two days, finished with a seafood broth. The spicy marinated squid on the side is a great pairing. Open year-round until 9 PM, which also makes it a viable option to pick up the evening before.
๐ฑ Must-Order: Manbokinne Gimbap (๋ง๋ณต์ด๋ค๊น๋ฐฅ) — the signature abalone entrail gimbap that took over 50 hours to develop. Pair it with the spicy marinated squid (์ง๋ฏธ์ค์ง์ด๋ฌด์นจ) on the side. Also worth trying: the whole abalone rice ball (ํต์ ๋ณต์ฃผ๋จน๋ฐฅ) if you want something different.

⑤ Dagami Gimbap — Donam & Ara Branches (๋ค๊ฐ๋ฏธ๊น๋ฐฅ ๋๋จ์ ·์๋ผ์ )
A Jeju-local gimbap brand with branches across the island. What they're known for is gimbap that's noticeably bigger and more stuffed than your average roll — and they tuck a pair of plastic gloves in with your takeout order, which is a thoughtful touch. All branches are takeout-only; there's no eat-in.
Staying in Nohyeong-dong or Yeon-dong? The Donam Branch opens at 6:30 AM and is the earlier of the two. If your route takes you through Ara-dong toward Hallasan, the Ara Branch is the more direct stop — but note it opens at 8 AM, so factor that in if you're leaving very early.
๐ฑ Must-Order: Dagami Gimbap (๋ค๊ฐ๋ฏธ๊น๋ฐฅ) — the fist-sized house roll. Tuna Royal (์ฐธ์น๋ก์) is the crowd favourite. For something more substantial, the Hwawu Ssam (ํ์ฐ์) wraps Korean beef with garlic and pickled radish — one roll is genuinely a full meal. Note: plastic gloves are included because it simply won't fit in one bite.

⑥ Jeje Gimbap (์ ์ ๊น๋ฐฅ)
A great pick if you're staying in the Nohyeong-dong or Yeon-dong area. Opens at 7 AM, which is early enough without being punishing. Known as a locals' regular spot — the kind of place people call ahead to reserve without even thinking about it. Takeout only.
๐ฑ Must-Order: Braised Shiitake Mushroom Gimbap (๋ฒ์ฏ์กฐ๋ฆผ๊น๋ฐฅ) — savoury and earthy, the kind of flavour you don't find at chain gimbap shops. The anchovy gimbap (๋ฉธ์น๊น๋ฐฅ) is the other regular favourite — bold and salty in the best way.

๐ฟ Starting from Seogwipo — Heading to Seongpanak
If you're staying in Seogwipo and making your way up to Seongpanak, this one's on your route.
⑦ Hallane Gimbap (ํ๋ผ๋ค๊น๋ฐฅ)
The name basically says it all — this place is made for Hallasan hikers. It's positioned on the road from Seogwipo toward Seongpanak, opens at 6 AM, and is especially known for its spicy jalapeรฑo gimbap. Order two or more rolls and they throw in a side of lightly salted radish — honestly perfect with a cup of instant noodles at the summit shelter. Takeout only.
๐ฑ Must-Order: Spicy Jalapeรฑo Gimbap (๋ก์ด๊น๋ฐฅ) — the one this place is known for. Order two or more rolls and they throw in a side of lightly salted radish, which pairs perfectly with a cup of instant noodles at the summit shelter. The heat wakes you up better than coffee at 6 AM.

๐ก A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Head Up
Beyond just where to buy gimbap, here are a few things that'll make your Hallasan day go smoother.
Call ahead — it's basically essential
On weekends and during busy season, even the pre-dawn hours can get crowded. A quick call the evening before to reserve a pickup order saves you from standing in line when every minute counts. Most places are very used to this and happy to accommodate.
Check the day off before you go
Most Jeju City spots close on Sundays. Hallane Gimbap closes Tuesdays, and Jeju Sopung Gimbap closes Wednesdays — so the day off varies by place. Always cross-reference your hiking date before you commit to a spot.
There are zero shops on the mountain — none ⚠️
This one catches a surprising number of people off guard. From the trailhead all the way to the summit, there is absolutely nothing to buy — no water, no snacks, nothing. Seongpanak entrance, Gwaneumsa entrance, the mid-mountain shelters — all of them have been without vending or shop service for years. Whatever you need for the entire hike, you bring from town.
Wrapping Up
There's something genuinely nice about driving through a dark Jeju morning, gimbap in hand, heading toward the mountain. It's one of those small rituals that makes the whole adventure feel real. Pick the spot that fits your route, get your order in the evening before, and have a great climb. ๐
